Hi! I’m a speech language pathologist and I have a few ideas on what it could be. In order of most likely to less likely they are—

    1. You’re dehydrated. Your vocal chords must have enough moisture as they are mucosal membranes. If you’re dehydrated you also will have thicker mucus in your throat.  Throat clearing is very bad for your vocal chords. Try to swallow hard or drink. Chewing gum can help sometimes as well.
    2. If you’ve started a weight-lifting program, you may be slamming your vocal chords together as you lift. This can cause irritation. Another body function that can have this same effect is constipation (if you’re pushing hard to pass waste).
    3. If you just started taking an inhaler like Albuterol (like for exercise induced asthma), this can cause irritation and hoarseness.
    4. Check your tongue for a white coating. If you have this, you may have thrush. Thrush can go down into the throat and will cause hoarseness. If you do, see a doctor and you will get an anti-fungal swish or pill.
    5. If you recently started any other new medication, look for side effects of hoarseness.

I hope these ideas get you started. If it doesn’t get better then I’d recommend seeing an ENT. They can look at your vocal chords with a camera and do an actual diagnosis.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my question. It may be the hydration and working out points. I’m drinking more water and nose breathing during exercise and as often as possible. Thanks again.
