Confused about carbs in cream and milk

I was advised not to have milk on keto because of the lactose but to have double cream instead because it has very little lactose. Because of this I have been putting cream in my coffee instead of milk but that has been taking me over my daily carbs so now I have switched back to milk as it appears to have much less carbs in the food diary app I am using 🤯 Can anyone help me understand?

A cup of heavy whipping cream has about 1/4 the carbs of milk. Less lactose is replaced by fat if it is easier to view it that way. Besides the lower carbs, the heavy cream adds a boost of fat. Many people new to keto have a really tough time getting enough fat, mainly due to years of brain washing by the food industry in saying fat is bad and to eat more carbs. The extra fat is a welcome addition to most in the keto or low carb lifestyle. Remember....you are looking to severely limit carbs but replace those calories with healthy fats; not just limit carbs.

Are you sure your not looking at sweetened creams or coffee creamers versus plain heavy cream or double cream? Unsweetened True double cream is more difficult to find in the U.S. it is around 42% milk fat. Heavy cream here is about 35% milk fat. For coffee, heavy cream is a suitable substitute (especially if your accustomed to just plain milk)

  • Thank you so much. That helps a lot! I live in Scotland so our double cream is like your heavy cream I think 🤔Also,  I think you’re right though, I need to get my head round the fact that I’m not just limiting carbs but replacing it with fat 🙈seems really scary but if it works....! Thanks!
