IS IT BAD TO EAT TOO FEW CALORIES?? Enthusiastic noob needs good advice!!

So this is day 11 on the keto diet and I am loving the way I feel! I have a question that I cannot seem to find the answer to anywhere, and hoping somebody can help me out please. I am A 5’4” woman weighing 190 pounds. My macros are 101g fat, 83 g protein and 16 net carbs. With a 28% calories deficit.  I’m keeping my carbs under 10 a day religiously sometimes finishing out a day with 4 or 5 g of net carbs. The problem is by the time I get done eating, (I use intermittent fasting and eat a 12:30 PM breakfast and then dinner at about 7:30 pm) I have hit my fat quota, sometimes I fall short on the Proten  by about 10 g, and never even come close to eating all my net carbs. My calorie requirement is about 1293  but there are more times when I’m not hungry enough to eat all of the calories but I still always hit my fat macro. I find that I am usually about 1000 to 1100 cal per day while hitting my macros. IS IT BAD TO EAT TOO FEW CALORIES? Also I don’t really excercise because it is still very cold where I live. Please hopefully somebody out there can help me know if I’m doing the right things or not. Please help!!

I know the answer to this because I see Dr. Ken Fujioka in San Diego, world-renown internist and weightloss expert (you can find him on YouTube, he is the physician not the pop star).  I asked him the same question and basically he advised me that this is not only fine, it is great, esp if you want to accelerate weight loss.  Consider the N of bariatric patients who reduce their intake to 500kcal per day.  If you were exercising then you’d probably be hungrier.  I like the yoga app called DownDog, it’s free during COVID19 and there are very gentle moves you can try (like Yin yoga), totally doable with Keto. Good luck!

Thank you SO MUCH for answering my question!! I will definitely check him out. I have read things that Have said that eating  lower calories will slow down my metabolism do you know if there is any truth to that? Thanks again for your time and keto knowledge!   MJ

MJ I think when for the most part, we tend to eat less when doing keto because we aren't that hungry.    It's fine.   It's also fine to eat more when really hungry.   Just follow how you feel.    It keeps the body guessing and it won't slow down the metabolism to change our eating patterns.

Thanks Sandy for answering my question! That makes a lot of sense.

  • First, exercise is not too important on keto, your body is burning its own fat.  So don’t sweat that aspect.  I walk and use row machine for toning and the cardio I need.   I don’t always eat all calories and carbs allowed, and I am steadily losing.  Stay strong!
