I Don’t Like Meat :(

Hi, I’m Tara. I’m starting back on low carb after losing weight with it successfully many times. I just never maintain it because... well... I don’t like meat much.

I’ve done various forms of LC for years. I used to eat and enjoy meat very much, but these days I’m really leaning more toward vegetarian. I just don’t like meat or eggs much anymore. I love fish and shellfish, and I do enjoy meat on occasion, but I find it very hard to live without lots of vegetables and fruits.

I probably SHOULD do a low calorie diet so I can eat fruits and veggies, but I’m such a junk food addict (salty stuff like popcorn, pretzels, etc.) that if I don’t do something that totally restricts it, I’ll convince myself, “Oh, two little Cool Ranch Doritos won’t kill me” and then I’ll eat 20. At least I don’t eat whole bags of junk food like I did when I was younger.  I also love rice and potatoes, and I could eat them for every meal.

I know I’m supposed to eat as high fat as possible to lose weight faster, which is the main reason I do LC (because I get REALLY impatient on other diets and give up) but fat makes me feel awful when I eat it. I feel so much better eating lighter.

I want to stick with this, but I just can’t make myself eat it. Yesterday all I had to eat until my husband got home from work was a low carb chocolate ice cream bar, a sugar-free orange gelatin with whipped cream and a cube of cheese. I just couldn’t force myself to eat the chicken or steak I had sitting in the fridge.

Then we went to Longhorn’s and I had their chili (surprisingly very low carb!) and a salad. I ended up at 29 carbs for the day, which is more than I wanted, but still not too bad.

I think soups are probably the way to go for me now that I think about it. Soup is one of my favorite things, and I DO eat meat if it is in soup.

I really want to try the vegetarian version of the diet, but it’s so low calorie I don’t know if I could make it.

Anyone else doing this who can’t stand to eat a lot of meat or fat?

You can do this without eating red meat or pork, chicken however your diet will be very bland. If your okay with bland, make sure you are doing your macros correctly or you could really suffer in all ways.  Do some research also - keto/ vegetarian. Maybe you just want to do really low carb and not keto? Fish dipped in butter or seafood in butter will be a staple for you? Try to like eggs again. Maybe egg bake with loads of veg. I hope you can stick to it because either way you will feel a lot better not eating all the carbage. Avacados you can have a few a day.

I would have been starving going by your day until dinner Tara. Lots of people do Keto as vegetarians ~ Google and you will be amazed.  Pinterest has lots of recipes but watch out for sugars refined or ‘natural’ artificial sugars & non Keto foods in them. Carbs & sugar are totally addictive ( Susan Peirce Thompson Ph.D.) YouTube

how about a beautiful salad with sliced avocado add a piece of fish (fried in butter & olive oil) laden with a creamy watercress or parsley sauce (butter , heavy cream, black pepper, Himalayan pink rock salt, chopped watercress, ) you are only limited by your mind set, don’t be so mean to yourself, you deserve to eat well. Fried fish with cheese sauce....

  • The recommendations above are spot on...  You can definitely get enough protein and fat without much meat.  I eat two or three huge salads a day- I'm talking 6 oz of romaine lettuce, tomato, cucumber, olives, etc.  I add 1 ounce of cheese and 2-3 ounces of meat.  This is very little meat compared to what most people eat, but it easily brings me to 110-120 grams of protein each day.   Then I add a few tablespoons of flavored olive oil as dressing.  It is a lot of fat but feels lighter in my stomach than traditional salad dressing.  Fatty meats are usually recommended because they allow you to get your fat intake up, but they are not essential.  Eat any protein that you can stomach- seafood, eggs, chicken, tofu, tempeh - and add fats with things like olive oil, avocado, and nuts.  The soup thing is also a great idea, especially with winter coming.

I’m going to make some chicken soup today. I have some chicken breast, and chicken broth, and I’m going to make it Thai inspired by adding some cilantro and lemon juice. I will probably use the last of my salad veggies and have soup and salad for lunch. For breakfast, I just had a few mixed nuts.

I usually don’t eat dinner, but I have some thin breakfast steaks I need to use. I might cook them tonight and eat them dipped in mustard tomorrow. I can’t go the store until Sunday, because my husband has the car and he isn’t off until then. I think I will just exist pretty much entirely on soup, because it’s my favorite way to eat any kind of meat. I especially like soup with ground beef, cabbage, onions and tomatoes. I should be able to make that fairly low carb if I don’t use too many onions and tomatoes.

I will say that I love any meat my husband cooks on the grill, especially ribeye, so whenever he is off work I’m going to have him grill up extra stuff like chicken that I can put in the fridge and eat for a couple of days.

I had a really nice soup yesterday. I poached two boneless chicken breasts in two cartons of chicken broth. When they were done, I took them out and diced them up and put them back in with some shredded cabbage and a handful of cilantro leaves, plus salt and pepper, and cooked it about ten minutes. I can’t believe how good it was. It was too low in fat, but I think the light freshness is why I really liked it. Even the kids went nuts over it. I’m having the leftovers today!

So glad you enjoyed it. A good way to add more fat is fry onions in lots of butter then add the stock etc. You can also add heavy cream twirls to your bowl before serving. 😋
