Why?

Why do you count net carbs instead of total carbs?

Hi 👋 personally I now count total carbs as I follow a Keto diet.

I started out counting net carbs because I am 100% strict about Keto so careful which veg I eat. I have changed over with the mind set that once at goal (half way there) I may introduce different carbs through more varied vegetables, sweet potatoes etc and don’t want my taste buds to run away with themselves. I also want to teach myself about the food I eat.  I am a true carb & sugar addict so know this is going to be my life but I want opportunities ahead to incorporate different food even if only occasionally.

Sorry if this is way more information than you asked for 😧

there’s a whole bunch of info on the ‘self education’ post ~ just as well i don’t spend my day grazing for food, I no longer have time 😂🤣

Well as you  likely know, net carbs = total carbs minus fiber carbs as listed on nutrition labels.  It’s the non fiber carbs (sugars +++) that are used for energy (before or instead of fat) or metabolized to added fat if not used immediately for energy.  The fiber carbs pretty much go right through. Plus they’re so good for us!

I think we’re talking net carbs because of the way the nutrients are reported.

This is what I love about this forum, differences that unite us in mutual acceptance ~ so we each can do our own research & listen to our own bodies. 🌷

  • Thank you everyone for your great answers.  They really helped.  Now my next question is how many net carbs do you have in one day?  I read the Keto diet, but must have missed that part.

libbywill7 that also varies 😱 the ‘norm’ is 20g either net or total but some people raise that. If you test your blood preferably or urine ketones you can tell whether you are having too many carbs as you won’t be in ketosis. As carbohydrates can be made by our own bodies I don’t care how few I eat just so long as I keep to 20g. On a normal day I get 14-19g More than 50g is a low carb diet rather than keto diet & you would have to be pretty active to be in ketosis at 30-50g I would assume. Keto Clarity by Jimmy Moore covers the subject to a much deeper level.

  • Joanna Thank you for your answer.  It was a big help.  Is Keto Clarity a book?  Or how do I find it?

libbywill7 google ~ but yes it’s a book, see ‘favourite self education’ thread for loads of free stuff too.

Please please spend some time reading old posts, what starts a thread on one subject often leads to some amazing discussions on other subjects. I guarantee you will not find it a waste of time. 👍🏻
