Let's try this again...

I've been on keto many times. I usually lose about 10 lbs and quit. I've been on for a week now and am down 5 lbs. I realize this is water weight so weight loss will likely dramatically slow down. The last few days however I've been very dizzy and not feeling well. I don't remember this stage. Are there stages that are common? What else can I expect while getting into my groove? Btw-i use ketostix and have been in small ketosis for 4 days. I'm eating between 1300 and 1500 calories a day with a net carb of 20-30 max. I'm 222 lbs so at this point it's melting off which is great, but I'm taking it in stride. I need to do this for the long haul and drop at least 80 lbs. I'm sticking with it, but it's pretty rough. My friends love to drink on the weekends so I need to navigate that as well. I know alcohol throws ketosis temporarily in my experience. So I need to be careful. Also, what's this keto flu??? Sorry for the long post, this is all my venting and questions about this round because I'm more motivated than ever. If I don't lose this  weight I'll never be comfortable carrying another baby and we want another one badly in the future. Thanks in advance <3

Yes. Drink lots and lots of water and add salt to everything. It will pass. It's your body flushing out the sugar. It's sometimes not a pleasant experience.

And add a little more fat to your day. Keto flu can come and go. I'll bet that's what your experiencing. Make sure your taking mineral supplements and potassium supplements. I had to go to the doctor way after week 1 because I thought I was actually dying. It was a very harsh experience for me

  • badmojomn should I be concerned about calories at all? Should I really ignore them? I mean, I'm more concerned with net carbs, but I do watch my calories and get concerned that they are too high even at under 30 net carbs

wildflowerklc in the beginning there’s no need to concern yourself with calories. It’s only when you hit a stall later that you may need to look at them. I would say your carbs are still on the high side but if you are happy, losing and Ketosticks show positive then go with what helps you stick to this. As for alcohol ~ I just happen to have posted on this very subject this morning from a really interesting article. PLEASE take a look under Low Carb Chat & the favourite self education thread.

At 9 full weeks I’ve lost 26.4lbs and it’s a way of life not a diet to me. 🙌

wildflowerklc you have been following ketogenic for 1 week. Woman take awhile sometimes to loose fat. Took me to the 2-3 month time to really start seeing a difference in a tight pair of jeans. Scale didn't move much. Fat doesn't weigh a lot that is why I suggest not weighing in much first month or two. Just keep on the plan. I tracked for first three - 4 months and wasn't hungry then with staying in my Calorie range. It's the net carbs at first you want to be cautious about. Eventually you won't want to eat the amount of "set calories ". Too much protein can halter loss also. We can't sit down to a huge steak, we cut that in half and save the rest for our fried egg in the morning. Think of the size of your palm x 4 or so per day. If you feel the urge to snack then snack on high fat items. Pork rinds, sour cream and macadamia nuts. No Atkins things. They have a tendency to hinder results in my experience. Keep your foods whole. Eggs, real mayo, tuna, low carb veg, whole cream, good fats from animals. Use that bacon grease to fry your eggs, etc. pork chop with side of fried cabbage. Eat the chicken skin, heck steal others, I do. Lol

BTW: to much chicken ratio has studies that to pork, fish, red meat ratio can increase glucose. I rarely eat chicken and this is hard because I love chicken wings. Keep the fat in the hamburger when You fry for taco meat, drink the juices from your beef pot roast. I look at fat in a whole new way now. Fish baked in butter lemon - I drink up that butter sauce with a spoon. As I go into my 7 month now I have lost 18+ pounds and have roughly 19 to go but that is a major goal my body frame may not like. I have a heavy frame bone and muscle. Macadamia nuts, butter, bacon, oils not from a seed,no canola no crisco no veg oils,  grease from drippings, fat on animals, whole cream. I make homemade low carb cheeseburger soup, with whole cream and leave that grease from the burger in there. I freeze this for a heavy keto day. Works wonders. Don't worry too much on calories until you get to a point you will say " I'm not hungry and it's lunch time". Don't eat then or very little. Push that hunger pang. It's okay. Eat till just satisfied. This comes weeks in. At first my body wanted everything so I bought good pork rinds online, realgoodpizza, sour creams and cream cheese, I stuffed my face until my sugar craving at the moment went away. I eventually wasn't hungry throughout the day much. I eyeballed what I should eat compared to what I wanted to eat to avoid over eating. I dip a lot of meats in a tad of real mayo and butter now. I probably eat half the amount of food I did 6-8 months ago. Hang on. You will get thru this. It's a crappy feeling just have to take mineral supplements, potassium and drink loads of water and salts. I think I had to take ibuprofen the first month here and there. Headaches out of the blue and felt nauseated, felt like I was going to die and went to doc, everything checked out. I even had nerve pain in my feet and in my hands. The supplements helped and willpower. I feel tremendous now. My good friend said I looked great as she hadn't seen me in awhile. It's worth the pain for me. I'll never go back to regularily eating carbage. Find some low carb creamy soups you like and freeze them. It's a great thing to have on hand and can know what your putting in them and quite filling. I am a soup monster now, guarding my low carb soups because everyone in my house loves them.

Great advice from the others! You need seat salt, magnesium, and potassium and drink water like it’s your job. This helped a lot with my Keto Flu.

Get some Brain Octane Oil and make Bulletproof coffee with nothing but coffee, butter, cream and the oil. Whip it up with an immersion blender. It’s sooooooo good! And my fat is now MELTING OFF again.
