Starting at 50 carbs/day

Hi, I'm 31 years old, 265 pounds, 5'6"...size 18 pants/1x shirt.  I had my son a year ago and it's been harder then ever to take the weight off.

I also am not starting off at 20 grams/day, that was much too restrictive for me.  I failed miserably and honestly I want to be able to have some fruits and grains!! I can always decrease as time goes.

Has anyone started off at 50 carbs a day? How were your results

  Thank you!

  • Read the book The Keto Reset Diet. It will help you understand why cutting out the grains and sugars is important. Another book is Grain Brain. I guarantee this will help you a lot to lose weight.

  • I have read lots of literature about Keto.  I have cut out grains and fruit in the past and it was too low for me.  I'm starting at 50 grams of carbs, so just looking for anyone was started out at a higher carb ratio

20-50 carbs you  go into Ketosis.

By eating grains and high sugar fruit you really aren't doing keto. You can have strawberries, blackberries, blueberries...well all berries are allowed. You just need to watch the quantity.  However, for some people it's easier to slowly go into keto...dropping the amount of carbs along the way. Yes people can do keto on 50 carbs but I would say usually you drop below 20 then slowly add back after you are in a fat burning state. It's going to be very difficult to get into fat burning while eating fruit and grains. IF you can hold on with very low carbs for about 4 days while adding 75% of you calories as healthy fats I think your cra ings will go away...some people take up to a week. Good luck.

jamieliberty Hi Jamie. I think at your bmi, cutting back carbs will help you take off some weight. My mom ate a lot of the ketogenic things I was making yet still had her toast once in awhile and she lost a lot of her belly fat. I think it’s a wise choice for you to start low carb, then ease into lowering that net carb. You will find that when you start taking off the body fat just reducing the carbs to 50, at some point you may have a stall but your motivation level will increase to get the body fat off more because your seeing some results. At that point start into keto or get to the keto point. As you transition from a lesser carb stand point your also training your mind and your taste buds. I think it’s a good idea for you, but keep that motivation once your pants and shirts start to get larger on you, tell yourself, keto is coming and I want to look great! you know most all keto followers lose body fat, and make sure you do some good self education on the subject. I think a lot of people that follow what your doing and easing into ketogenic over time have an easier time transitioning and training their minds to then starting keto lifestyle jumping in after a high carb diet. The important part is sticking to that net mark every day.  When you incorporate more fats, you might be satisfied enough to not reach the 50, and when that happens, congratulate yourself, and tell yourself you can do this. When your noticing you don’t need the 50 for days and days, then start into the 40 net mark. Keep us posted. I think this is a great idea. My daughter jumped into keto with me, for 3 months. She gave up as she felt to restricted. she gained back more weight then when she started.
