Gaining Weight on Keto
Hi all - I’m a 56 year-old postmenopausal wiman who’s been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s. We’ve been eating keto since 11/8.
I’ve managed to maintain the first couple of pounds I lost when we started keto, but that’s all. And I’ve gained a noticeable amount of fat in my abdominal area. I didn’t have much weight to lose in the beginning, but I sure don’t want to be carrying around all this extra fat! I just feel softer and squishier than I did before.
I’m thinking of transitioning to something else since this is just not working for me. We have a cruise planned in late March, and I’d like to get this under control before then. Does anyone have any suggestions about transitioning off keto and on to something else? I’ve lost weight in the past on Weight Watchers, but that’s not anything I’d like to go back to...I was starving the entire time!
Thanks for your help,
Mary

No, no, no, don’t give up yet. If your abdominal fat has gone from firmer to squishier, you may be experiencing a water-retention plateau where lost fat gets replaced by retained water (something like that). I had several last year. I first lost about 20 lbs then weeks later another 10, then a month later some more, etc.. (I was 273, lost 63, am up a little after taking a month break; FYI, I’m 52 and am almost post-menopausal, lol; had a surprise period last summer after 11 months without), And I think that with each plateau, not only did my body reshape itself, but I think my “set point” weight changed. You don’t have a lot to lose like I did/do, but it does sound like my pre-whoosh plateaus. Google “soft belly fat whoosh” to find articles about this phenomenon. I know Lyle Macdonald talks about them.
