Day 4 - Ketones!!

Today is my fourth day following Keto and I’m happy to say I had a mostly maroon Keto strip. I feel like crap, but seeing the strip show some results will keep me motivated. I’ve taken potassium and magnesium supplements and drinking plenty of water. This is so hard for me being a Diet Coke addict, beer drinker, and fast food frequenter. Best of luck to everyone. Oh, and I’ve lost 7 pounds 😊

  • Sodium!  Your kidneys don’t retain sodium as with a carb rich diet so the need for sodium goes up.  Review some of Dr. Stephen Phinneys info on the subject.   The science of ketogenic nutrition is his life’s work and he knows the Keto or Adkins “flu” is basically salt depletion based on medical research.  He’s been in nutritional ketosis for about 14 years and uses high sodium boullion (since we don’t eat salt preserved meats and foods anymore) to supplement to at least 5 grams of sodium.   The thought of boullion broth makes me gag so I use sodium supplements (great for on the go) and will throw back and wash down  a 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of iodized salt couple of times a day (not on an empty stomach).  As a reference, a tbs of table salt is 5 grams of sodium chloride which is 2.3 grams of sodium.  I track my sodium with the app because some foods fill in the blanks better than others.   It’s a small inconvenience compared to how great I feel.
