Protein/Fat Question

Hi!  I keep reading that we should stay under our protein goal and that fat is a lever so it's ok not to meet it, if we have weight to lose.  I'm a little confused.  I definitely have a lot of fat to lose.

Does it matter if my fat intake is lower than my protein intake?

Should I be making sure that the fat is higher than protein?

I was under the impression that my diet should be 70% fat, but reading that it's ok not to get all your fats, if you are fat is confusing me.

Advice is appreciated! Thanks!

  • I think the important thing is to stay at or under your carbs...if you aren't hungry you are getting enough fat and I wouldn't worry about it

If you're hungry add in a little more fat and see how you feel

Pelicandy50 What about protein? I have been up on protein the last two days and stalled the last two days. Started on the 6th and only down 5lbs.

Hi Julie, meet your macros as closely as possible.  If you are under on anything, let it be on proteins.   Don't try to second guess the given quantities.  Try your best to have exactly what Carb Manager says to have and it will work like magic.  I ditched 70 lbs in 8-9 months.   Every morning, enter what you'd like to eat and play with your food choices til they max out your macros without going over more than a "titch".  You got this Julie.  Follow the road map to the goal!  In your settings, ensure your current weight gets updated weekly, and your calories deficit is slid to the left to be -34%.  That's what worked for me and never hungry.

Hi all-I'm on my second day and I'm struggling with the protein/ fat levels. I've gone over protein both days. I am not sure how to balance it out -I don't eat red meat or fish- so chicken has been my meat of choice.  How is everyone keeping their protein down?

    Jen Hi Jen,

I mostly use eggs and low carb protein powder to meet my protein goal.  I sparingly use cheese.  Veggies, like asparagus, broccoli, and avocado, also have protein so increasing your veggie intake while decreasing your chicken can help as well.  I will have chia seed pudding some mornings instead of eggs.   Key to keeping your protein low is eating smaller portions of chicken and getting more of your calories from fat elsewhere.

Hi Julie, definitely make sure you are getting more healthy fats than protein.  Fat is necessary on a keto diet and is part of training your body to burn fat instead of carbs for energy.  MCT oil (naturally found in coconut oil, but pure MCT oil is best) is particularly good for ketosis.   Stay as close to your macros as possible.  They have been selected based on your height, weight, age, gender, goals, etc.  Also,  if you get more protein than you need, your body turns it into glucose and this prevents or makes it difficult to reach/stay in ketosis.
