1 week, no ketosis

Hi all, I've been on the keto diet for 9 days and am not yet in ketosis. Besides not getting too much exercise, I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I'm drinking water and tracking my foods. No weight loss, no ketosis.

I'm female, 66 y/o, 5'3", 200lbs, and would like to lose 50lbs. I've attached a typical day's tracking. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I'm starting to get discouraged.  Thank you! -Dawn

Looks like you are going over your "allowed" carb count.

This is mine for today ( I still have one meal to input...but won't jump my carbs)

    20.3g of 37g Total Carbs

    10.9g Net Carbs

    9.4g Fiber

    43.6g of 48g Fat

    60.1g of 194g Protein

    724 of 1359 Net Calories

What's your typical food intake? Avoiding all sugar and grain?

Hang in there, I'm in the same spot....60 and fighting to get about 40/50 lbs off. It just doesn't come off as easy as it used to!!

Thought I would also ask how are you checking your keytones?

If you are using urine stripes, they might be bad. Even tho it looks like you are going over the carb count, you have still cut carbs way back...I'm in Ketosis eating up to 37 carbs a day.

I just went thru a mini hissy fit/panic attack over thinking I was out of ketosis but discovered a new batch of urine strips were bad.

13 hours of me trying to figure out what I did to throw myself out of ketosis drove my husband to go purchase the some new urine sticks locally. The new batch came from our local pharmacy where I had been buying them until I got the idea to save some money and purchase from an Amazon vendor.

Frankly, the aggravation wasn't worth the six bucks I saved.馃お

  • If this is any help, it took me 3 weeks to get into Ketosis (Now dealing with Keto Flu symptoms).  However, I have been restricted to a much lower carb rate than I am seeing for you and some of the folks that responded.  That might make a difference too.  Below is my daily allowances.

    14g of 14g Net Carbs

    16g Total Carbs

    2g Fiber

    82g of 87g Fat

    49g of 70g Protein

    997 of 1123 Calories

Hi Dawn. Honestly I think your macros and calories look good!  If that鈥檚 what you鈥檙e doing everyday I would stick with it and give it a couple more days or so. Sometimes it takes a bit to show on the scale and all of a sudden it falls off and shows on the scale in a bigger way than you expect. How are your clothes fitting?  Sometimes that鈥檚 a bigger indication.

Aside from going over in your carb allotment, what method of testing are you using and how often per day do you test? https://keto-mojo.com/testing-when-to-test-ketones-glucose/

VickP i think your protein goal is too high in respect to your fat. I think your fat intake should be higher or you may enter gluconeogenesis

Oh it absolutely is. I ran the numbers by a friend who is a nutritionist and she told me no more than 60 grams a day of protein. I have tried to adjust my macros to get it down, but the protein number stays jacked up. I think it factors my average work out load(very active) vs my age (60) and it throws that high number. The software (any software) can only "do so much" the human using the software has to have the ability to think...and sort things out.,,LOL.

Thanks for taking the time to point that out. It's good to know people are watching out for each other and who knows someone else may read it and get a clue they need!

If you are managing to do all things right and still not getting any of the sticks to change even a bit, might consider buying some at a local pharmacy. Buying local may decrease the chance of getting old/out of date/expired stock. I get mine (now) from my local Kroger Pharm.

I know one of the Pharm techs there, she told me the chain is pretty good about staying on top of getting fresh stock and watching expire date.

(They are double the price馃槪 but I'm not pulling my hair out on days I KNOW they should be changing....so I figure it is saving me money on hair plugs 馃槤)

I go out of ketosis if i eat too much protein, as for carbs i eat no salads, completely animal diet with 0 carbs. As for your picture , 22 carbs might be too much, cut it down to almost 0 and you could supplement with potassium citrate besides salt for your minerals not to get the keto flu.

  • Alex M I'm a little confused. I eat a lot of salmon, tuna, chicken, and some steak. No salads. MCT oil for fat.  I am trying to keep under 68g protein.  Lost 8 lbs in 5 weeks and I am trying so hard! Here's my chart from yesterday.
