Old and tired

I started Keto last Monday.  I was skeptical.  I’ve tried every diet/fad out there and have never been successful.  I’m happy to say 1 week in and I’m down 10 pounds and feel great.  The biggest think is my mind and focus.  I’m clear and not so foggy.  Here’s to week 2

I’ve been on this low carb for six weeks now. Down 10 pounds and ten to go. I love it and I’m not hungry at all. Stick with it; you should see results. Some days I am at a standstill.

Most of us on the Keto lifestyle who made the change to primarily lose weight will experience several plateaus where their weight loss will stall or even reverse.  Do not get discouraged, stay the course and/make adjustments in your matrix or eating habits and you’ll continue the decline in body mass.  Most of us find that our body dimensions continue to shrink even during an apparent plateau.  Pay more attention to the notches on your belt or looseness of your clothing and don’t get over concerned with your bathroom scale weight.  I’ve hit 3 plateaus in my 16 months since going Keto, one lasted 2 months with less than 2 pounds of loss (some weeks with actual weight gain).   At the 1 year anniversary of the new lifestyle my dietitian coach reviewed my Carb Manager log and suggestions to break the latest plateau by actually increased my daily carbs by modifying my matrix from a weight loss goal of 3 pound per week target to 1.5 and eating very controlled volumes of fruit that met my matrix  (I was only getting 60% of my daily targeted carbs, avoiding as much as possible).  I quit snacking (fat bombs & nuts typically) between meals to allow larger “fasting” periods between meals.   Lastly I balanced my daily matrix to spread the carbs/fat & protein more equally between the meals (weighted heavily to lunch and dinner).  These changes worked well FOR ME, others may have to find alternate modifications to tweak their program.

To put things into prospective, I’m 67 years old with a weight loss goal of 100 pounds (sw 332 lbs). To date I’ve lost 72 pounds, 23 pounds since tweaking my matrix 4 months ago.   Since tweaking, I have been losing the 1.5 pound per week fairly consistently.  Please don’t take this as a prescription for success but more as a suggestion that making some modifications to YOUR plan may all you need to break through a plateau.

FYI - I do monitor my ketones, initially using pee strips (they only are accurate in the early days of Ketosis) and after a month or so starting doing daily blood monitoring of my ketones and glucose and log the results into Carb Manager. I’m consistently in Ketosis but at the lower end (.3 to  .9) but this was the target my dietitian suggested and it is working FOR ME.

There is more to the Keto lifestyle than weight loss.  I’ve gone from 6 daily meds to 2, starting feel better within 10 days of getting off of carbs and am now facing having to clean out my closet and get a new wardrobe (Keto can be pleasantly expensive!). I have no plans to ever go off my Keto lifestyle, when I hit my goal I’ll modify to a more maintain mode.  I only wish I knew of this lifestyle when I was 25 years old.  Good luck to all Keto converts!
